svchost.exe crashing with Thinapp builds on Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1

Up to now, a number of our client Windows boxes (Windows Vista 32-bit) were running Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 11.x for malware protection.

Symantec stopped support for SEP 11.x in mid January 2015 and we were forced to migrate to SEP 12.1.

Since then, we had been getting numerous reports of Thinapp-built executables crashing on launch with Windows reporting that svchost.exe had crashed. However, once the error message was closed, the apps appeared to continue to function normally (including accessing the network or internet). This does NOT occur with all apps and not even all apps that tries to get online. However, browsers (esp. Opera) are a major problem.

We tried to add the .exe as exceptions in SEP and to even disable SONAR (as Symantec recommended to us), but this does not solve the problem.

We were unable to locate any known compatibility issues with SEP 12.1 and ThinApp. These apps were built using many versions of ThinApp from 4.5.0 to 5.1.0, but we were unable to see any pattern if this problem is affecting only older apps built with older versions of ThinApp.

Any advice?
