Exception EAccessViolation since 4.6.2

$
0
0

We've detected a regression in ThinApp 4.6.2, unfortunately.

Multiple applications are giving an Access Violation error under Windows 7 (32-bit). The error is the following:

Exception EAccessViolation in module <application.exe> at <address>.

Access violation at address <address> in module '<application.exe>'. Read of address <address>.

Attached are 3 sample trace files showing what seems to be an error in ThinApp where it calls FindNextFileW with a malformed argument.

The char array is filled with the name of the .dat file, then partly overwritten by the name of the executable and send (incorrectly) using the size of the name of the .dat file.

Or so it seems.

This occurs in 4.6.2 and 4.7.0, but not in 4.6.1.

Error message while starting Teamviewer (virtualized)

Hi,

I'm trying to capture TeamViewer (v5.1.10408). A rather old version but I never upgraded my license for it...

The destination system (where I want to run it) is Windows Server 2012.

After copying the captured package to that OS and starting it up, I always get an error message:

Win title: C:\Program Files (x86)\TeamViewer\TeamViewer.exe

Content:

C:\Program Files (x86)\TeamViewer\TeamViewer.exe

Der angegebene Pfad ist nicht vorhanden.

Überprüfen Sie die Pfadangabe, und wiederholen Sie den Vorgang.

Rough translation:

The specified path does not exist.

Check the path and repeat the operation.

I've attached a screenshot of this message to this post.

It doesn't matter if I try to capture this Application under

Windows XP (x86)

Windows 7 (x86)

or

Windows 7 (x64).

I'll always get the error message on the destination system.

TeamViewer (it's a 32bit application) was installed in

Windows XP: C:\Program files\TeamViewer

Windows 7 (x86): C:\Program files\TeamViewer

Windows 7 (x64): C:\Program files (x86)\TeamViewer

After closing the error message, the application does run but because I start / restart it quite often, the message get's quite annoying.

I didn't change any options in the package.ini file for this project, apart from trying to uncomment the "Wow64=0" entry but this didn't change

anything after recompiling and starting it on the destination system...

Any hints why I get this message and possible ways to circumvent that?

Sandbox Removal hangs, looping on a +R +S directory in the sandbox

$

We are using Thinstall 4.7.3 to build apps that may have been captured in an earlier version of Thinstall.

When our app exits, Thinstall starts up its sandbox cleanup program, which is unfortunately identified by the name of one of our apps when using ProcExp.exe.  It manages to clean up much of %APPDATA%\Thinstall\SandboxName, but gets hung in a loop when cleaning %SystemRoot%, because it cannot remove the 'assembly' directory, which is marked as System and ReadOnly by either Thinstall or the OS on Thinstall's behalf.  The assembly directory is indeed empty.  The only problem is the incorrect attributes on the assembly directory.  THe sandbox removal process is stuck in a loop where it:

calls CreateFile to get a handle to the assembly directory

     calls QueryAttributeTagFile

calls SetDispositionInformationFile, but is told that the 'attribute' dir cannot be deleted

     calls CloseFile

(and loops endlessly, hoping things will change)

It would seem that it was Thinstall that created this sandbox.  So Thinstall should be able to remove it properly, but is seemingly unable to do so!

This is seen on WinXP and Win7.  Probably Win8 as well, but I haven't looked yet.

Is this a bug?  Is there a fix?

We have somewhat of a work-around to have a program that runs before our app is started, out of a command file that afterwards launches our thinstall-virtualized application. But then, what point is 'RemoveSandboxOnExit'?

George Byrkit

still exists in the Program Files. I never had this issue in 4.7.2. I want to know if there is a work around to tackle with this issue.

Any help please.

Project and Visio 2013 ThinApp

I've ThinApp'd (separately) Microsoft Project 2013 and Visio 2013 with a Windows 7 32bit clean image with ThinApp 4.7.3. I used MAK licenses for now, just because I didn't want to deal with the KMS server licensing hassle. The ThinApps work great, but one thing I noticed when trying to "Share" the document and select by Email, I receive an error that I can't open my .ost file. Office 2010 is installed locally, not ThinApp'd. When I have Outlook open along side the ThinApp'd Visio or Project I get a different error saying that I'm not connected to a mail server, or that an Unexpected e-mail error has occurred. I followed the general ThinApp procedure for Visio and Project in the link below. Any idea how I can fix this issue?

VMRC plugin and Thinapp Factory

No matter what combination I try, I can not get the vmrc plug-in to be recognized and used.

I have tried:

IE9 and IE10,  Tried installing the plug-in presented when accessing a console on my vcenter (as per the only docs I find on the subject of vmrc).  The vcenter console works, but a manual capture in TAF complains I have to install the plug-in.

I have installed the vmrc-sdk-5.1.0   Same results as above

I get the same results with firefox 22.0

I have searched for vmware-vmrc-win32-x86-e.x.p.*.exe as per the installation docs but no download links found on the page except for a link to the installers for thinapp factory.   Nothing about the plugin.

Problems with ThinApp'ed application that uses native WINWORD.exe

$

Hi,

I'm using ThinApp 4.7.3 to virtualize an application that consist of a couple of HTML files and word documents.

The ThinApp'ed entrypoint startup command is something like

CommandLine="%ProgramFilesDir%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" "%ProgramFilesDir%\MyApp\MyApp.htm"

Notice that we are using the native Internet Explorer here. Which is running fine, but the webpage also includes multiple .doc files which need to be opened using a native installed Office 2010. When opening files, WINWORD shows "Microsoft Office cannot verify the license for this application"

I've already tried to alter my package.ini to allow WINWORD to open outside the virtualised environment with the following as per link

VirtualizeExternalOutOfProcessCOM=0
ChildProcessEnvironmentExceptions=WINWORD.EXE
ChildProcessEnvironmentDefault=Virtual

The actual problem is I can see that WINWORD.exe is starting when the .doc document is opened from the webpage using task manager, but it does not show it at the end user. It appear to be stuck at the background or it does not appear to the enduser. So I kill the process after waiting for a while.

Next time I try to start WINWORD.exe natively, I see it has the .doc I selected from the webpage before as a repaired/recovered document, which it cannot open because the file is not found, probably because it's outside the bubble.

Any thoughts on this?

Kind regards,

Arnold Veenema

ThinApp Outlook 2007 with physical installed Outlook 2003

$

Hello,

I have an issue running a Outlook 2007 as ThinApp on a system with physically installed Outlook 2003. If I have Office 2003 already running and execute the ThinApp Outlook 2007, it will open Outlook 2003 in a new window. If I have the ThinApp running and start Outlook 2003, the Outlook 2007 window will be activated (no Outlook 2003 starts).

I have isolated the Outlook 2007 ThinApp as good as possible and set IgnoreDDEMessages=1. As suggested in a vmware blog entry it is necessary to use a command line switch with Outlook 2007 to run a new instance of it. The only thing I found is to start outlook.exe without the " /recycle" switch. But it opens a new instance of the outlook version, which is already running and not multiple versions as necessary.

Finally we need to start the ThinApp Outlokk 2007 while physically Outlook 2003 is running. The user should work wih both applications simultaneously, but different profiles on different servers.http://www.dict.cc/englisch-deutsch/simultaneously.html

Do you have any suggestions about that? Any help would be appreciated...

Microsoft .NET Framework "Access is Denied"

I am having trouble getting a component of a ThinApp application working. A bit of background information:

The virtual desktop does not include a native browser.

This is a custom application that basically uses presents two IE Frames within the application.

The application is packaged and linked to IE9 and .NET Framework 3.5.1 packages (Via AppLink)

The application contains a button that opens an external application (ThinApp and Linked via AppLink)

When I click on the button that opens the application, I am getting an "Access is Denied" message from Microsoft .NET Framework.

"Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application" Some further error message below.

See the end of this message for details on invoking

I am a bit stuck on a workaround for this. I guess if I cannot get the packages to work nicely together, I might just have to install .NET Framework in the gold image? I am assuming that there are some conflicts between the .NET on the virtual bubble vs. the virtual desktop? Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Java - issues with Flash in Firefox

$

Hi all,

I have been trying to get a working thinapp of Java (6 update 37), Firefox (17.0.1 ESR), and Flash (11.5.502) as a single package. I did all the required customization before doing a postscan, and everything worked great. I had issues with Flash not working originally, which were solved by girakul's suggestion here: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/407959?start=15&tstart=0

Then I noticed that Java worked as long as it ran before Flash. If I visited a page with Flash content and then navigated to a page with Java content, the Java content would not load. However, if I deleted the sandbox in the appdata\roaming\thinstall location, Java would again work until the next time a Flash page was visited. I originally considered enabling RemoveSandboxonExit, but the user settings for Firefox are located within the sandbox and I cannot delete them. I even tried using vregtool to compare the contents of the registry.rw.tvr from a clean (Java working) sandbox and a sandbox where Java was broken (as explained by Jason Coleman here: http://virtuallyjason.blogspot.ca/2012/04/messing-with-thinapps-registry-for-fun.html) but was not having any luck.

I was hoping someone may have a suggestion of a setting I could tweak to hopefully solve the issue of Java breaking after Flash is run.

Thanks.

MS project licensing in thinapp or View environment

We have request from business unit to have 2 copies of MS proejct 2010 Standard shared among 20 users. Only 2 users will be concurrently accessing MS project while the rest will have to wait unit the app is free up. The business owner also wants this project be made available on the users' ipad/tablet.

Now I know MS project licensing is based on per device so if i purchase 2 and ensure that only 2 users accessing it at any one time, am i in complience with the MS licensing? If not, how do i work about it?

THe MS project will be purchased under Volume licensing with SA. We don't have a view nor thinapp environment so if the MS licensing is handled correctly, then can work on how many users for the thinapp or view environment.

Any kind soul can help to answer this?

sandbox on network share - advice

Hi

I am looking for advice on placing the sandbox on a network share (netapp cifs) for a VMware View Non Persistent Floating environment. I am looking to keep the sandbox out of the user profile (roaming) and I also do not want to re direct %APPDATA% which I believe can cause issues with packages if the sandbox is left at the default location.

Any advice, issues, considerations for placing the sandbox on a network share would be welcomed.

ThinApp 4.7.3-Office 2010

I have read in KB article 1022287 that Office 2010 that is nativly installed will work with a Thinapp (TA) version of office.  That does not seem the case.  I have Office 2010 standard installed nativly on Windows 7.  KMS activates this with no issues.  I then TA Access 2010 and test that application.  The TA access runs fine.  When  I combine the two I get the license error when I run a TA access with native office.

Has anyone been able to get Office to work with another Office product without the licensing error and repiar warning.  VMware states they fixed it but I sill am unable to get it to work.  I have tried all the steps in the KB article as well as some others but nothing seems to work.
