Run Script before opening Outlook 2010

We have a command we need to run to load an add-in in Outlook prior to opening it.   We have thinapp'd Office and it works fine but we need to figure out how to run the script only once when they first open Outlook.  Does anyone know of a good way to do this?  I have it to the point where I created a shortcut under Office Tools to run the script manually but I would like this to be seamless to the user.

We basically need to run the following to load the add-in.

ThinApp for applications run from Network Share

$

Hi there,

I have some users who are using couple of applications that are run directly from a network share. The applications are legacy products and are not fully/officially compatible/supported on Windows 7. Is there anyway to wrap these applications using ThinApp?

Although the users are able to run these applications on Windows 7, some of the features are currently not working. In case one of the apps, the issue seems to have surfaced since a recent Windows security update. Prior to the update, the application was working fine on Windows 7. As mentioned earlier, the applications are run directly from a network share. The users just have a shortcut on their desktop that launches an executable from a network share. So, there's no local installation. Is it possible to use ThinApp in this scenario?

If you need more information, please advise.

Thanks

Office 2010 ThinApp with Add-Ins

We are struggling with finding the best solution to deploy Office 2010 along with a handful of Add-Ins.  Should we include Office on the Natively or would it be better to package everything into one big ThinApp?   Doing it all in one would be very time consuming since it can take quite a bit of time to install everything.  Some require a profile to be created as well.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thinapp process never ends when starting IE10 native

Hi

I have a couple of applications that use Internet Explorer through Thinapp due to special add-ons etc. And it works great except that it never closes the Thinapp EXE file when Internet Explorer ends on 4.7.3.

However I know this was working as it should on the servers before we upgraded to IE 10. Now, it does not work as it should and the processes just piles up. How to solve this?

I tried AutoShutdownServices (even thouhg its for services) and all other debuging options that was commented out, nothing seems to help.

I tried to package this in Thinapp 5 instead and the process does end, but it throws an error on Internet Explorer with werfault.exe that you have to acknoweldge before process ends and I'm not able to get around this error or supress it.

Tried to disabled WER and add registry exceptions etc. nothing helps. Also tried enabling the IgnoreDDEMessages without any help.

I read some mentioned that we should have an exception on child process svchost.exe, I tried this in external/virtual or whatever without any success. Anyone have any idea?

The Thinapp package is supposed to run on 2008 R2 servers with no admin rights.

Maybe I'm starting it wrong? I use commandline to iexplore followed by web address like this. CommandLine="%ProgramFilesDIR%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" http://Your.URL

Or I have to do a full packaging of IE 10?

Thanks for any input

Thinapp-ed Visual Studio fails to debug other program

I've tried to thinapp Visual Studio(VS98 and VS2005 tried), the thinapp-ed VS IDE(msdev.exe and devenv.exe) runs and generate EXE ok. However, when I try to debug the compiled program(F5 or F10), even a simple hello-world console app, the to-be-debugged program(debuggee) runs but VS IDE cannot attach to the debuggee, the VS IDE just freeze.

Doing thinreg on the VS2005 executables  does not help here.

Has anyone succeeded in debugging a program from thinapp-ed Visual Studio IDE, or am I missing something?

Hi Guys,

I'm pretty new to ThinApp - currently running version 5.0.

my question is - I can do the capture and build process fine but how would I go about installing the finished .MSI file to a specific location for example : C:\Program Files (x86)\vApps\Mozilla?

I have tried this command line  - msiexec.exe /i firefox.msi INSTALLDIR="C:\Program Files (x86)\vApps\Mozilla" /qn - which installs to the directory however when I run the firefox.exe I get the error:

thin App Error.JPG

any ideas ?

thanks

Hi,

I am trying to package up an installation of Adobe Reader XI, the issue that im having is that the size of the EXE\DAT file is in excess of 500MB - I am looking at streaming this across the network so the size of this would be an issue, can anyone recommend the best method to compile Adobe Reader which would result in a much smaller package?

ThinApp Factory from GitHub, on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS problems

$

Hi,

I've installed an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server, added all dependencies from the README file that came with Thinapp Factory from GitHub.

After making some adjustments in both the setup.cfg and setup.sh file regarding passwords, I finally was able to build and deploy TAF successfully.

I can create a workpool, add CIFS-shares etc, no problem. However, when doing an autocapture of an easy application (like putty.exe), using a base installation of Windows-7 64-bit as the workpool image - I get problems.

The windows image starts to be reconfigured as you might expect, but fails to complete "Setup is preparing your computer for first use".

I read that this error could be the case if C:\temp doesn't exists on the vcenter server. However, I'm using the vcenter appliance which is not windows based.

Anyhow, the Windows machine reboots and tries to customize itself again, and again.. fails..

Versions:

Windows 7-64 bit

vSphere 5.5.0 Build 1331820

vCenter 5.5.0 Build 1398495

Thinapp 5.0.0 Build 1391583

When configuring the "runtime" of Thinapp on the Ubuntu server, I just copied all the files from a windows system c:\program files\vmware\thinapp that was running that version. However, according to the ThinApp Factory README file, I seem to lack several files.

Am I supposed to copy even more files to the runtime directory, and where do I find them?

ThinApp Factory from GitHub: Guest username or password error

$

Hi,

with a risk of making a double post, I wanted to explain a tad further on what I've done in order to almost get the GitHub version of Thinapp Factory to work - in the hope that it might help others.

I've been struggling on getting ThinApp Factory 0.3.2 from Github to run on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Versions:

Windows 7-32 bit (SP1 + latest patches), used as Workpool image. Swedish release.

vSphere 5.5.0 Build 1331820

vCenter 5.5.0 Build 1398495

Thinapp 5.0.0 Build 1391583

VMware-VIX-1.12.0-812388.x86_64.bundle  (version 1.11 didn't work at all, coredump).

I added the prerequisite packages according to the README-file, but also had to add the git package and some more:

sudo apt-get install git

sudo apt-get install pwgen

git clone git://github.com/vmware/thinapp_factory

In order to be able and build the initial packages, I had to make these changes:

cp setup.cfg.example setup.cfg

setup.cfg

Replaced the following line:

db_password=pwgen 20 1

With:

db_password=01234567800123456780 (actually, the hash generated from executing pwgen 20 1 from the shell).

In the setup.sh file I made the following change:

# echo -e "$db_password\n$db_password" | smbpasswd -s -a $taf_user

echo -e "$db_password" | tee - | smbpasswd -s -a $taf_user

Because it wouldn't compile without errors otherwise.

After that:

make all

make deploy

So far so god.

When I create a workpool it creates a snapshot of my base image.

When I do an autocapture, TAF requests a new clone of my base image to be made and customized which is working great. It also seems to create an Administrator users with an unknown password.

After the customization phase Windows reboots and logins automatically as user "Administrator", TAF tries to execute a script via a "vmrun" command, and here's where the problem is:

It can't execute the script due to unknown username or password, see the catalina.out logfile:

--- catalina.out ---

12:31:29,314  INFO pool-2-thread-7 workpool.GuestCommands$RunCommand:96 - Running command: [vmrun, -T, vc, -h, https://vmvc001.myprivatedomain.com/sdk, -u, root, -p, ********, -gu, administrator, -gp, ********, runScriptInGuest, [LD-SSD-R5_001] TFA_cleanpool Instance e2960/TFA_cleanpool Instance e2960.vmx, -interactive, , echo test].

12:31:30,005 DEBUG pool-2-thread-7 server.AutomaticCapturer:417 - Waiting a few seconds to try the command again.

--- end ---

Because I have not set any password for Administrator I guess that the initialization of the Workpool image did it, and because Administrator is logged on - why isn't the system responding?

After several attempts, TAF will shutdown the workpool image and fail the attempt with an error stating that it doesn't think anyone is logged into windows.

Has anyone attempted to install Thinapp Factory from Github before and have a good description in how to make it work, because the README file is a tad too high level?

Thinapp 5.0 not capturing DLLs in SysWow64 folder

$

Many many many time lurker, first time poster. Be gentle!

I've been thinapping since 4.6 or so.. So I've got a fair bit of operating knowledge of capturing apps. Only a little knowledge on troubleshooting, besides,, missing file, insert file, rebuild. OR copypasta from forum!

Capturing an app that is designed for W7, it is a 32 bit app. Capturing on a W7x64.

Pre-scan, install app, configure app, run app (runs fine), post scan. No changes to project.ini before building.. Test on W7x64 box. Says missing DLL. Look at %SystemSystem% where syswow64 is merged to, and sure enough, the DLL isn't there. That DLL gets installed with the application, but ThinApp isn't "capturing" it.. Thinapp doesn't say anything is wrong. If I manually put the DLL in there, re-build, that works.. Problem is, it installs a metric boat load of DLLs, and would take me forever to figuring out which ones.

What am I missing? Why is the capture process not seeing those DLLs, and dumping them into the capture folder?

Thanks in advance,

-Kyle
